The results show that the volume of publications has fluctuated over time in response to climate-related events. While both Chinese and Western scholars emphasize the role of land use optimization, their research priorities differ: Western studies tend to focus on enhancing the built environment and uncovering underlying mechanisms, whereas Chinese studies prioritize planning interventions and policy-driven approaches. Notably, rural areas remain largely underexplored in both bodies of literature. Existing research can be categorized into three core areas: carbon emission accounting, morphological quantification, and the impact of morphology on emissions. Future research should aim to standardize carbon emission accounting methods, refine morphological quantification in alignment with low-carbon goals, strengthen rural-focused studies, and incorporate the spatial and temporal variability of morphological impacts.
