With the rapid growth of related literature, much of the knowledge in this area is undergoing fast cycles of “emergence–evolution–obsolescence”, posing significant challenges for researchers and practitioners in constructing an effective knowledge landscape. Grounded in the theory of scientific knowledge mapping, this study adopts the CiteSpace co-citation analysis method, using data from the Web of Science to examine the global knowledge network on low-carbon cities, aiming to present a more comprehensive and targeted knowledge framework. The study reveals the following in terms of knowledge network structure: (1) four major clusters of knowledge concentration, (2) a “center–periphery” organizational structure, and (3) a three-stage temporal evolution pattern. Regarding key content areas, the cognitive knowledge base of low-carbon cities includes three components: cognitive theories, carbon emission quantification methods, and associated low-carbon urban phenomena. The practical knowledge base comprises three major directions: sustainable transitions, circular economy, and smart cities. Frontier knowledge focuses on five domains: renewable energy, environmental policy, digital economy, green finance, and carbon trading. Based on the knowledge network analysis, the study identifies the following development trends in low-carbon city research: (1) an interdisciplinary character and integration of multiple sustainable development goals, (2) a dialectical evolution between “cognition” and “practice”, and (3) diverse, non-convergent paths of practice-oriented development.
