From a spatial perspective, this article explores the spatial evolution of the Shandong Peninsula urban agglomeration over time and investigates the influencing factors of its integrated development. The study finds that: (1) Spatial connections within the Shandong Peninsula urban agglomeration have gradually become closer, with a continuous improvement in the degree of spatial integration. (2) The spatial distribution of the urban agglomeration generally exhibits a “core–periphery” hierarchical structure, with a predominance of unidirectional links and relatively few cases of symmetrical, bidirectional interactions. (3) In terms of influencing factors for spatial integration, urban areas that are geographically closer, have higher frequencies of intergovernmental cooperation, and better transportation accessibility tend to show stronger spatial connections within the agglomeration. In contrast, a higher degree of external openness is negatively correlated with the formation of internal spatial linkages. Based on these findings, the study proposes pathways for promoting spatial integration within the urban agglomeration, including establishing multidirectional spatial linkages, enhancing bidirectional interactions with core cities, expanding substantive intercity cooperation, improving intra-agglomeration transportation infrastructure, reducing spatial accessibility gaps, and increasing internal openness.
