The purpose of this paper is to recognize and discuss the importance of preserving these dwellings. Two experiments were carried out in Qingming Bridge Historic District of Wuxi (a canal city) with 542 dwelling samples that were divided into original group and comparison group (454 dwellings rebuilt in a protective restoration project), both of which were tested with two evaluation factors: building prototype and fractal dimension of skyline. The experimental results showed that all the analytical targets in original group were higher than those in comparison group, which provided evidence for further qualitative discussion. It suggests that the traditional dwellings built by local residents in the past hundreds of years based on their living needs are an important landscape asset for the Grand Canal conservation because of their living culture, diversity and non-reproducibility.
